Castle to coast 2025 – Race report

Castle to coast 2025 – Race report by Andy George.
This is more of a sportfi but it doesn’t feel that way.
The swim was a 2 km lake swim at Eaton Dorney and we started at a very sociable 0815 although I did have to get up at 0530, the water was warm and pleasant and apart from being swam over twice no major incidents.
Some of you may have noticed that it rained yesterday, well it was a slight shower when getting into the lake but upon exiting the heavens truely opened, with the lord almighty wanting to make up for all the months of no rain.
After putting on an already sopping wet waterproof jacket and my bike shoes having realised I’d forgotten my socks I set off, with the aim of reaching hassocks some 107.6 km away.
The bike was very lumpy and the roads were busy and it rained for about 70 km of the bike, to the point where my Garmin bike computer decided to turn the language into German!
Once I reached hassocks, it was a slow change into running kit and started off with a pleasant 5 km run up hill to get into the downs, the run was brutal no ways about it, and yes it has stopped racing it was now about 28 degrees and glorious sunshine!!!
Anyway as I got over the final hill I ran walk with two other equally pained athletes towards the finish.
Brighton was very busy with a ‘race’ festival taking place and we spent most of the time dodging people covered in glitter and wearing hot pants.
Upon crossing the finish line after running / walking the 22.6 km I was knackered but got changed and then caught the coach back to Eaton Dorney and got in my car drove home getting back at about 0130hours – a very long day.
The race itself was well organised feed station were brilliant and it is a race that everyone I chatted to really enjoyed – but it was hard!
Nothing can prepare you for the 90 odd steps up to ditching beacon.
